Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY fix or hire professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah has these black, fuzzy patches that seem to be spreading. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to clean. I'm worried about our health and the damage to the wall, but I have no idea what this will cost to fix. Is this a DIY job with bleach, or do I absolutely need to hire a professional mold remediation company in Dubai, and what's a rough price I should expect for a room?

Black mould behind furniture in a Jumeirah villa is a common issue, primarily caused by trapped humidity from Dubai's climate and year-round AC use. The wall behind the wardrobe stays cold, and with limited air circulation, condensation forms, creating a perfect environment for mould growth.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach can work. Use a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. Scrub gently, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source; simply cleaning it will result in rapid regrowth.

For anything larger, spreading, or if you have health concerns like allergies or asthma, professional remediation is strongly advised. They will contain the area to prevent spores from spreading, use industrial HEPA filtration, and apply specialized biocides. In many Dubai buildings, this mould can indicate a deeper condensation or minor leak issue within the wall that requires expert diagnosis.

Cost is highly variable, but for a single room remediation of this nature, you should expect a professional assessment and treatment to start in the range of AED 1,500 to AED 3,000, depending on the extent of the infestation and necessary repairs. The most critical step is a post-remediation verification test to confirm the mould and spore count have been returned to safe levels.
