Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to make sure it's not something serious?

Based on your description, particularly the location in Jumeirah Park and the health symptoms, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the year-round reliance on air conditioning. The wall behind large furniture becomes a cold spot, causing moisture in the warm air to condense and create the perfect environment for mold growth.

While a small patch might be addressed with a diluted bleach solution, I strongly advise against DIY cleaning in this case. The presence of coughing in children is a significant red flag, as it suggests the mold may have become aerosolized and is affecting the indoor air quality. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration; it does not kill the roots (hyphae) nor address the underlying moisture problem. Furthermore, improper cleaning can agitate the colony, releasing a much larger cloud of spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor environmental quality. A professional inspection involves more than just looking at the visible spot. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras to find hidden dampness, and air and surface sampling to identify the specific species of mold. This is critical because certain types, like Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold"), require specialized containment and remediation protocols to ensure occupant safety.

For the health of your family and to guarantee the problem is solved at its source, a professional assessment is essential. I recommend you contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection. We can identify the exact cause, provide a remediation plan, and offer solutions to prevent recurrence.
