Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which feels slightly damp. It’s been there for a while but definitely got worse after the heavy humidity last month. Is this a job for a professional mold remediation company, or can I handle it myself with cleaning products from Ace Hardware, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a one-bedroom place?

Based on the description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by the UAE's high ambient humidity, likely exacerbated by a lack of air circulation behind the wardrobe. The dampness suggests a possible, but not definite, underlying condensation or seepage issue.

For a situation like this in a Marina apartment, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. While small surface mold can sometimes be treated DIY, the fact it's on a porous material (drywall), feels damp, and has been present for a while means it may have penetrated deeper than the surface. Using off-the-shelf cleaners often just bleaches the visible spores without addressing the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root structure) within the wall, leading to rapid regrowth. Improper cleaning can also aerosolize toxic spores, spreading the contamination.

A certified inspector will conduct moisture mapping and air/surface sampling to identify the mold species (crucial for determining the remediation protocol) and the exact moisture source. For a one-bedroom apartment, a comprehensive inspection and professional remediation typically range from AED 2,500 to AED 6,000+, depending on the extent of the infestation and the required containment measures. This investment ensures it's solved permanently and safely, in compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards.
