Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled mold growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s an interior wall in our Marina apartment, and with the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spread. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call our building management first?

For an interior wall in a Marina apartment, this is a common issue tied to Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use. The condensation from cold walls meeting warm, humid air creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, especially behind furniture that restricts airflow.

Your first step is to move the wardrobe and assess the extent. If the mold covers an area smaller than one square meter and the wall material is intact (not crumbling or wet), a DIY approach may be sufficient. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a solution of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. A dehumidifier in the room can help manage moisture levels and prevent recurrence.

However, you should contact building management immediately if the mold covers a larger area, if there's a musty odor, or if you suspect a hidden leak from plumbing or the AC system within the walls. In many UAE buildings, management is responsible for the structural integrity of the building envelope and internal plumbing. They should investigate for a potential leak, which is often the root cause.

For any uncertainty about the mold type or if the problem recurs after cleaning, a professional inspection with lab analysis is advised to identify the species and confirm the moisture source is resolved. This is the most reliable way to ensure it's handled completely.
