Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call Dubai landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's behind the wardrobe, so it was hidden for who knows how long. With this humid weather, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to get rid of it myself, or should I call my landlord in Dubai immediately?

Given Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use, that hidden mold behind the wardrobe is likely due to condensation buildup. Since you’ve just discovered it after two years, the extent could be significant.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. However, simply cleaning the surface often fails if the moisture source isn't addressed. The wall itself may be damp, requiring deeper investigation.

Given its location on a ceiling corner and the duration it’s been hidden, this is a serious case. The mold may have penetrated the plasterboard or be growing inside the wall cavity. In such instances, DIY cleaning is a temporary fix and can inadvertently release more spores.

You should call your landlord immediately. Under typical Dubai rental contracts, the landlord is responsible for resolving structural issues causing dampness and for the subsequent remediation. Document the issue with clear photos and send a written notification, as this creates a formal record. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact moisture source (often a leaking AC condensate drain pipe or external water seepage) and assess the full extent. Proper remediation involves containment, removal of affected porous materials, and addressing the root cause to prevent rapid regrowth in this climate.
