Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call landlord first?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. We're in a villa in Mirdif and I'm worried that the recent humidity has made it worse. What's the best way to deal with this myself, or should I call the landlord first?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth due to localized condensation and lack of air circulation, a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially in Mirdif. The wall behind a large piece of furniture like a wardrobe becomes a cold spot. When the humid air from the room contacts this cooler surface, condensation forms, creating the perfect environment for mold, particularly the black speckles you're seeing.
Your first step should be to document the issue thoroughly. Take clear photographs and videos of the affected area. You should then formally notify your landlord or property management company in writing (email is best). Under typical UAE tenancy contracts, the landlord is responsible for addressing structural and maintenance-related issues, which includes investigating and remediating the cause of the mold, such as potential hidden water leaks or insufficient insulation. While waiting for their response, you can begin initial containment. Carefully move the wardrobe away from the wall. To clean the visible mold on a non-porous painted wall, a solution of diluted detergent (not bleach, as it does not kill mold roots and can worsen the problem by adding moisture) can be used with a microfiber cloth. However, this is only a superficial fix. Crucially, you must identify and rectify the conditions causing it. Increase air circulation in the room, ensure your AC is running efficiently to manage humidity, and consider using a dehumidifier. For anything beyond a very small, superficial area (less than 1 square meter), DIY is not recommended. Improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination. The root cause must be professionally diagnosed. We strongly recommend a professional inspection to assess the full extent, identify the moisture source, and provide a protocol for safe, effective remediation.
