Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a while, and now I’ve found a pretty big patch of black mold behind the wardrobe. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and the humidity has been brutal lately. I’m worried about my family breathing this in, but I have no idea what it costs to get it professionally removed here. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach, or should I just call a pro and what’s a reasonable price to expect for a small room?

In your specific case, professional remediation is strongly advised. The combination of a persistent AC leak, visible black mould growth, and its location on porous materials like drywall and carpet creates a high-risk scenario. DIY bleach cleaning is ineffective on porous surfaces; it only removes surface discoloration while the root colony remains inside the wall. Agitating it during a DIY attempt can also release a large number of spores into your bedroom air.

The extreme humidity we're experiencing in Dubai acts as a constant fuel source, meaning the mould will almost certainly return unless the moisture issue is permanently resolved. A proper remediation process involves containing the area with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials (cutting out the affected drywall, removing the carpet section), HEPA vacuuming, and applying specialized antimicrobial agents. Crucially, they must also diagnose and fix the AC leak—the source of the moisture—otherwise the problem will recur.

For a small, contained patch behind a wardrobe, the scope is relatively limited. The final cost is highly variable and depends on the extent of hidden damage discovered once the wall is opened. It is best to request an on-site assessment from a company that provides a detailed scope of work and uses post-remediation verification testing, such as air sampling, to confirm the space is safe. This verifiable result is what separates a proper remediation from a simple cleaning.
