Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the recent humidity. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or is it a job for a professional mold remediation company, and what kind of cost are we looking at for a room this size?

Given the recent humidity and your kids' coughing, it's wise to take this seriously. Black spots behind furniture, especially in a bedroom, are often a sign of condensation buildup from our AC-dependent climate, creating a perfect environment for mold.

For a small area (under one square meter), a thorough DIY clean with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water can be effective; bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, the coughing suggests potential spore dispersal. Disturbing it without proper containment could aerosolize spores throughout the room.

In Dubai, the real concern is identifying and fixing the moisture source. This is often a small plumbing leak in the wall or, more commonly, condensation from an AC chilled water pipe or cold wall meeting humid air. Simply cleaning the visible mold won't stop it from returning if the underlying issue isn't resolved.

With health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can conduct moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the species and the extent of the problem, which is often larger than what's visible. For a standard master bedroom, professional remediation typically involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and source correction. The cost is driven by the remediation scope, not just room size, so you'd need an on-site assessment for an accurate scope of work and quotation.
