Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY removal or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside. It’s been really humid lately and the room doesn't get much sunlight. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling a professional company or is this a DIY job?

Black mold behind furniture on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, especially in humid periods and in rooms with poor air circulation and year-round AC use. The constant temperature difference between the cool interior and hot exterior wall creates condensation, providing the moisture mold needs to grow.
For a small area (under one square meter), a careful DIY approach can be effective. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the wardrobe away to allow the area to dry completely. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a solution of white vinegar. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the underlying moisture or root structure. After cleaning, ensure the wall is thoroughly dried. Improve air circulation in the room and consider using a dehumidifier to maintain humidity below 60%. However, given the location on an exterior wall, the problem might be more extensive than what’s visible. If the mold has penetrated the drywall or insulation, or if it returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source is still active. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and identify any hidden issues within the wall cavity. Companies with a microbiology lab can provide culture testing to confirm the mold type, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation protocol, especially for black mold. For persistent or large-scale problems, professional remediation is the safest and most effective solution to ensure it is resolved completely. |
