Black mold behind wardrobe in daamp room: DIY or landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled patches appearing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and the room always feels a bit damp even with the AC running constantly. What’s the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or is this a job I need to escalate to my landlord immediately?

This is likely condensation-related mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating a temperature differential on exterior walls. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot with no air circulation, allowing moisture to condense and mold to grow.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective. Scrub the area and allow it to dry completely. However, this only addresses the symptom, not the root cause of the moisture. The underlying issue is the dampness. You must move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Wipe down the wall and the back of the furniture regularly to remove condensation. Consider using a moisture-absorbing product like a desiccant in the area. Given the persistent damp feeling and the fact it's on an exterior wall, this is a building envelope or insulation issue that is your landlord's responsibility to rectify under Dubai rental laws. The constant dampness indicates a problem they must fix. Document the issue with photos and formally notify them in writing. They should arrange for a professional inspection to identify the moisture source, which could be insufficient insulation, a leaking pipe within the wall, or other structural concerns. A surface clean is temporary without solving the moisture intrusion. |
