Black mold behind wardrobe in damp room, who to call?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and we're in an older building in Bur Dubai. We keep the AC running but the room still feels damp. What's the best way to get rid of this for good and who should I call to handle it properly?

That black mold behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation buildup on a cold external wall, a very common issue in older Bur Dubai buildings. The wall is chilled by your AC, but Dubai's high external humidity constantly tries to seep in, creating a damp surface perfect for mold growth behind furniture that restricts airflow.
For a proper, permanent fix, you need a two-step approach handled by different specialists. First, call a reputable mold inspection and remediation company. They will assess the extent of the growth (it's often worse behind the wall), safely remove the contaminated materials, and treat the area with professional-grade biocides. Crucially, they should provide before-and-after lab testing to confirm the spore count has been reduced to safe levels. This addresses the immediate biological hazard. However, simply removing the mold won't stop it from returning. You must address the root cause: the condensation. For this, you need to contact a building envelope or waterproofing specialist. They can apply internal or external waterproofing and insulation treatments to that specific wall to create a thermal break, preventing the cold surface that attracts condensation. This is the "for good" solution. Always verify that any company you hire holds a valid DDA (Dubai Downtown Authority) or DM (Dubai Municipality) certification for the specific work being done, as this ensures they adhere to local regulatory standards for environmental health and building works. |
