Black mold behind wardrobe in Dubai - landlord or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. I think it might have started after that really humid week we had last month. I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. What's the best way to get rid of this properly in Dubai, and should I call my landlord first or just handle it myself?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. Your timing makes sense; that recent humid week created ideal conditions for growth, especially in a poorly ventilated corner. It is very plausible it's exacerbating your allergies.

Notify your landlord first. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), the landlord is generally responsible for rectifying structural issues and problems arising from building defects, which includes persistent dampness and mold. Document the issue with clear photos and send a written notification. Do not attempt a major removal yourself, as improper handling can spread spores and worsen the problem.

For a small patch (under one square meter), a careful DIY approach may suffice while you wait for the landlord. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent, then dry it thoroughly. However, the location behind the wardrobe suggests a persistent moisture source, like condensation from an exterior wall or a small leak. Simply wiping the surface will not address the root cause, and the mold will almost certainly return.

The proper solution requires a professional inspection to identify and eliminate the moisture source. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the origin and advise on necessary repairs, such as improving ventilation or addressing thermal bridging in the wall. This diagnostic step is critical for a permanent fix in Dubai's climate. For health safety and to ensure the landlord addresses it correctly, requesting a lab test to identify the mold type can be useful, especially if household members are experiencing allergic reactions.
