Black mold behind wardrobe in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s an interior wall and I’m worried it’s from the AC unit or maybe a hidden leak. What’s the best way to get this properly inspected and treated here in Dubai without getting ripped off?

Black mould behind furniture on an interior wall is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by condensation from AC units or a hidden plumbing leak. The high humidity and constant cooling create ideal conditions for mould growth, especially in low-airflow spots like behind wardrobes.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow the area to dry completely and improve air circulation. Wipe the mould off with a diluted vinegar or bleach solution, but this is only a surface fix. The critical step is finding the moisture source. Check if the AC vent is directly hitting the wall, causing condensation. Feel for dampness on the wall and floor to rule out a leak from pipes or the bathroom next door.

For a proper inspection, hire a professional who uses a moisture meter to detect hidden dampness within the wall. They should also conduct a visual inspection of the AC system, including the ductwork and drain pan, as a blocked condensate drain line is a frequent culprit. Be wary of any company that immediately recommends extensive remediation without first providing evidence of the moisture source and type of mould present.

The most credible providers will explain their diagnostic process and may suggest air or surface sampling to be analysed by an accredited microbiology lab. This identifies the mould species and confirms the cleanup was effective. In Dubai, look for companies certified by the Dubai Municipality or those that adhere to international standards like IICRC, as they follow regulated protocols rather than just spraying and wiping. Always request a detailed report with their findings and the lab results, which is your assurance you're paying to solve the problem, not just a temporary cover-up.
