Black mold behind wardrobe in humid Dubai? How to remove?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It’s been extra humid in Dubai for the past month, and I’m worried it’s gotten worse because we keep the curtains closed during the day. Is this definitely mold, and what’s the best way to get rid of it without having to move all our furniture out?

Based on your description, this is highly likely to be mold, specifically a type of surface mold commonly found in Dubai's climate. The combination of high ambient humidity, a lack of air circulation behind the wardrobe, and potential condensation from your AC unit creates a perfect microenvironment for mold growth. The closed curtains further inhibit airflow and sunlight, which accelerates the problem.

The first step is to confirm the type and extent. While surface mold is common, the presence of Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") requires a different remediation protocol. I strongly recommend a professional inspection and air quality test to identify the species and spore count, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation method as per UAE health and safety guidelines.

For a preliminary, contained area, you can carefully clean the surface with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold-cleaning agent. However, this is a temporary measure. Simply wiping it away does not address the root moisture source or the potential hyphae growth within the drywall. The furniture must be moved to allow the wall to be properly treated, dried, and sealed with antimicrobial coatings to prevent recurrence. Attempting to clean in situ will likely disturb and aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination.
