Black mold behind wardrobe in Jumeirah Park - DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. It wasn't visible until I moved the furniture to clean, and the area feels slightly damp to the touch. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to handle this myself, or do I need to call a professional company?

Black mold growth behind furniture, especially in Jumeirah Park's humidity, is a common issue caused by restricted airflow and condensation against the cooler exterior wall. The dampness you feel confirms an active moisture source.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can work. First, move the wardrobe away to let the wall dry completely. Clean the area with a mixture of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Then, address the moisture source. This is often condensation from the AC making the wall colder than the room's dew point. Improving air circulation behind the furniture is critical.

However, if the wall feels soft, the discoloration has penetrated, or the area is larger, the mold may be within the wall itself. In these cases, DIY cleaning is ineffective and can aerosolize spores. Professional assessment is needed to identify the extent and the root cause, which could be a more serious interstitial condensation issue or even a hidden pipe leak. A reputable inspector uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to diagnose the problem accurately, not just treat the visible symptom. In Dubai's climate, without fixing the underlying moisture dynamics, the mold will almost certainly return.
