Black mold behind wardrobe: landlord or profesional first?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's an interior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and I'm worried because my youngest has had a persistent cough for the last couple of weeks. What's the proper way to get this tested and handled in Dubai – should I call the landlord first or go straight to a professional cleaning company?

Contact your landlord immediately. In Dubai, landlords are legally responsible for resolving structural or maintenance issues that cause mold, such as leaks or inadequate insulation, which is a common source in JVC apartments. Document the mold with clear photos and date stamps before moving anything.
For a persistent cough and visible spreading, a professional indoor health inspection is necessary to identify the mold species and the moisture source. The high humidity and constant AC use here can cause condensation inside walls, creating ideal conditions for growth. A proper assessment with moisture meters and, if needed, lab analysis of a sample, will determine the scope of the problem. Do not attempt to clean significant mold growth yourself, as improper methods can aerosolize spores and worsen the issue. Your landlord should arrange for remediation, but you can recommend they hire a company that provides verifiable before-and-after testing to ensure it’s resolved. This is critical for health, especially with a child experiencing respiratory symptoms. |
