We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled patches appearing on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing the Marina. I pulled the wardrobe out yesterday and the wall felt slightly damp, and the smell was really strong. I’m worried it’s black mold and that it’s spreading inside the wall cavity.
What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back after we clean it, especially with the high humidity here?

The damp wall and strong smell indicate an active moisture problem, which is the primary concern. In Dubai's climate, this is often caused by a combination of high external humidity and a cold spot on the exterior wall, exacerbated by the wardrobe trapping stagnant air. Do not attempt to clean it yet. Disturbing visible mold without addressing the hidden source inside the wall cavity can aerosolize spores and spread the problem. For a situation involving structural dampness and a strong odor, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to determine the extent of the growth within the wall. They use moisture meters and borescopes to inspect cavities safely. Effective remediation involves three steps: identifying and fixing the moisture source (often requires checking for capillary rise or a thermal bridge in the wall), removing the contaminated materials (e.g., cutting out and replacing affected drywall/plaster if deeply embedded), and HEPA vacuuming all surfaces. Simply wiping the visible spots with bleach or vinegar is a temporary fix and will not prevent recurrence. Prevention requires managing humidity and airflow. Keep furniture at least two inches from exterior walls to permit circulation. Consider using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months. Ensuring your AC is serviced regularly and set to a consistent temperature can also reduce condensation forming on cold walls. |
