Black mold behind wardrobe: professional or DIY cleanup?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. I'm worried because my allergies have been acting up the last couple of weeks. We're in a villa in Jumeirah and I know the humidity has been high lately. Is this something I need to get professionals to handle immediately, or can I try to clean it myself this weekend?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai villas due to high humidity and year-round AC use creating condensation in stagnant spaces. For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY cleanup with proper precautions.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Move the wardrobe to ventilate the area. Clean the hard surface with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or white vinegar, not bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Discard any moldy porous items like cardboard. The key is to identify and address the moisture source—it could be condensation from the AC cold wall, a small internal leak, or humidity trapped by the furniture.

Given your allergy symptoms have worsened, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning removes visible growth but not the microscopic spores affecting air quality. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source and assess the wall's condition inside. They can also provide air or surface sampling to identify the mold type, which is crucial information for those with sensitivities. In many cases, the wall cavity or insulation behind may be compromised, requiring more than surface cleaning to prevent it from returning.
