Black mold behind wardrobe: remove myself or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. It's been incredibly humid lately and the wall feels slightly damp to the touch. I'm really worried about our health and the damage to the apartment. What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely, and should I call my landlord first or a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description of a spreading, damp, black fuzzy patch behind a wardrobe in Silicon Oasis, this is a situation that warrants immediate and professional attention. The high humidity we are experiencing, combined with the lack of air circulation behind large furniture, creates a perfect microenvironment for mold growth, particularly the problematic Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold").

Attempting removal yourself is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing the risk of respiratory issues and cross-contamination throughout your apartment. Over-the-counter sprays are superficial and will not address the underlying moisture source.

Your first call should be to your landlord or building management. Under UAE tenancy law, the structural integrity of the property is their responsibility. They must be notified to investigate and rectify the source of the dampness, which is likely a hidden plumbing leak or, more commonly in Dubai, condensation from an AC unit or a breach in the building's external waterproofing (a common issue after heavy humidity).

Concurrently, you should engage a professional mold remediation company like Saniservice. We do not just clean; we conduct a thorough inspection using moisture meters and borescopes to locate the moisture source, perform air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, and then execute a controlled remediation process. This involves setting up containment barriers, using HEPA filtration scrubbers to clean the air, and safely removing and disposing of contaminated materials.

For a definitive assessment and a safe, permanent solution, I recommend you contact our specialists. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We will provide a detailed report that you can also share with your landlord to expedite the necessary repairs.
