Black mold behind wardrobe, shoudl I worry about spreading?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the wall facing the sea, and the room has started to feel really humid, even with the AC on constantly. What’s the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be worried about this spreading to other rooms?

Yes, you should be concerned about it spreading. The high humidity you're describing, even with AC running, is a classic Dubai issue that creates ideal conditions for mold growth. The wall facing the sea is particularly vulnerable as it's exposed to constant, salt-laden humid air, which can lead to condensation inside the wall cavity behind your furniture.

For a proper inspection, you need a professional who does more than a visual check. A legitimate inspection involves using a moisture meter to quantify the dampness in that wall and an infrared camera to identify any hidden cold spots or water intrusion that you can't see. The most critical step is air and surface sampling, which must be sent to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis. This identifies the exact species of mold present—whether it's the more common Cladosporium or the more concerning Stachybotrys (black mold)—and determines the spore count in your bedroom's air compared to the outside. This data is essential to assess the actual risk and the required scope of remediation.

Until you get an inspection, move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout the room. The potential for spread to other rooms is real if the root cause, which is likely persistent moisture within the building envelope, is not identified and resolved by a professional.
