Black mold behind wardrobe: treat myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe. This must have been building up for ages and we only saw it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. With this humidity, I'm worried it's gotten worse. What's the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

This is a very common scenario in Dubai villas, especially in rooms with exterior walls. The combination of year-round AC creating temperature differentials and high ambient humidity leads to condensation inside walls, particularly behind large furniture that restricts airflow. That trapped moisture creates an ideal environment for mould.
For a small, contained area (under one square meter), you can attempt to treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the wardrobe away and let the wall dry completely. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like gypsum board. After cleaning, ensure the area is bone dry. However, if the mould covers a larger area, has a strong, musty odour, or if you see it has penetrated through the plasterboard, professional remediation is strongly advised. Disturbing large colonies can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home. Professionals use containment barriers, HEPA filtration scrubbers, and antimicrobial treatments approved for use on building materials. They can also identify and rectify the underlying moisture source, which is critical to prevent recurrence. Given the climate in Jumeirah, the root cause is likely persistent condensation or a minor, hidden leak. A professional inspection can determine this and provide a targeted solution, as simply cleaning the visible mould without addressing the moisture will result in it returning. |
