Black mold behind wardrobe, treat myself or tell landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Springs. It's the wall that faces the outside and it's been so humid lately I guess it crept in. What's the most effective way to treat this myself before it gets worse, and is this something I need to report to my landlord?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of interstitial condensation, a very common issue in Dubai's villas, particularly in communities like The Springs. The wall is a partition between your air-conditioned bedroom and the humid external air. The cold from the AC penetrates the wall, and when the incredibly moisture-laden Gulf air (often 90%+ humidity) meets this cold surface inside the wall cavity, it condenses, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold, especially behind large furniture that restricts airflow.
For a small, localized area you can attempt initial treatment yourself, but with critical precautions. First, move the wardrobe away from the wall. Mix a solution of 1 part distilled white vinegar to 3 parts water. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not simply wipe the mold, as this can aerosolize spores. Instead, lightly mist the solution onto the affected area, let it sit for an hour, then carefully wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Dispose of the cloth immediately. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan. A dehumidifier in the room is highly recommended to maintain humidity below 50%. Crucially, you must inform your landlord or property management company. Under typical Dubai rental regulations, the structural integrity of the building and issues arising from it (like water ingress or insufficient insulation) are the landlord's responsibility. Reporting it creates a paper trail and ensures they are aware of a potential recurring issue that may require professional remediation or improved exterior sealing to prevent it from happening again. If the area is larger than one square meter, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or if you or your family experience any respiratory issues, this is no longer a DIY job. Hidden mold within the wall cavity is likely. In these cases, a professional inspection with thermal imaging and moisture meters is essential to determine the full extent.
