Black mold behind wardrobe: urgent professional needed or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I suspect it’s the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and I’ve never noticed it before, but it’s been extra humid lately. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

Black mold behind furniture, especially in humid JVC, is a legitimate concern. The high humidity we've had recently combined with year-round AC use creates perfect conditions for mold growth in areas with poor air circulation.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach may be sufficient. However, bleach is not recommended as it is mostly water and can feed the mold roots hidden in porous surfaces like drywall. A better DIY solution is a distilled white vinegar spray, left to sit for an hour before scrubbing and thoroughly drying the area. Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source, which is often condensation from the cold exterior wall behind the wardrobe.

Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible spots are often just the tip of the issue; the root system may be deeper within the wall. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity's condition and perform air or tape-lift sampling to identify the mold species. This is important as some types, like Stachybotrys (true "black mold"), produce mycotoxins that can exacerbate coughing and allergies.

For health concerns and to ensure the problem is fully resolved without risking cross-contamination, hiring a company with a microbiology lab for analysis provides definitive identification and a clear remediation plan. They can also advise on rearranging furniture to improve air flow and prevent future recurrence.
