Black mold behind wardrobe: who to call, cleaner or specialist?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah, and the room always feels damp no matter how low we set the AC. Is this dangerous black mold and who should I call first, a regular cleaner or a specialist?

This requires a specialist, not a regular cleaner. The damp wall facing the exterior in Jumeirah is a classic sign of a building envelope issue, where outdoor humidity is infiltrating and condensing on the cooler interior wall surface. This persistent moisture source means the mould will return even if the surface is wiped away.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common problem exacerbated by the high humidity and constant AC use creating a temperature differential. The black spots could be Stachybotrys (the "toxic black mould" of concern) or, more commonly, Cladosporium or Aspergillus. Only a lab analysis from a surface or air sample can confirm the species and associated health risks.

Call a certified mould inspector first. Their job is to identify the exact moisture source—whether it's a seepage issue, thermal bridging, or insufficient insulation—and test the mould type. They provide a remediation protocol. A reputable remediation company then follows that protocol to fix the moisture problem, safely remove the contaminated materials, and clean the area, verifying with post-remediation testing. Splitting inspection and remediation roles ensures the company fixing the problem didn't also invent the diagnosis.
