Black mold causing cough: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots that have spread across the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I’m worried it’s a bigger issue but don’t know if I should just scrub it with bleach or if I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it.

Black mold spreading behind a wardrobe is a strong indicator of a persistent moisture issue, likely from condensation due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. Scrubbing visible spots with a bleach solution is a temporary fix but won't address the root cause—the mold has likely penetrated the wall material itself.

For a child's persistent cough, professional assessment is strongly advised. The term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins and is a known respiratory irritant, especially for children. A proper inspection identifies the species and maps the full moisture source, which could be a hidden leak or insufficient insulation causing condensation.

In Dubai, remediation for this scale typically involves isolating the area, removing affected drywall or plaster, and using HEPA filtration to prevent spores from spreading during cleanup. DIY cleaning can aerosolize these spores, worsening the air quality. After remediation, a post-test verifies the environment is safe. For health symptoms, always consult a doctor and inform them of the potential mold exposure.
