Black mold causing cough: DIY removal or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold I just found growing along the ceiling in our master bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because the AC has been running non-stop with the humidity. It’s concentrated in the corner above the shower and seems to be spreading. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I just call a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which creates significant condensation. The coughing in your children is a legitimate concern, as this type of persistent moisture-related mold often releases spores that irritate the respiratory system, especially in enclosed spaces.
For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Crucially, address the moisture source. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working correctly and run it during and for at least 30 minutes after showers. Wipe down wet surfaces and check that your AC unit is not contributing to the humidity; its drain line should be clear and the drip pan dry. However, given that the mold is on the ceiling and appears to be spreading, it suggests a deeper moisture issue, potentially in the ceiling void or behind the tiles from a leaky pipe or insufficient insulation. DIY cleaning will only remove the visible growth, not the root cause. For a suspected recurring problem of this nature, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water and can take samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This scientific approach ensures the problem is resolved completely, protecting your family's health. |
