Black mold causing cough: DIY removal or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m starting to think it’s the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It’s a pretty big patch, maybe a meter wide, and it’s been humid since the last round of rain. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or should I just call a professional company for mold remediation and what’s the typical cost for a job like this in Dubai?

Black mold exposure can definitely cause persistent coughing and respiratory irritation, especially in children. Given the size (a meter wide) and the location (bedroom), this is a significant indoor air quality issue that requires careful handling.

DIY removal with supermarket bleach is not recommended for several reasons. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall or plaster; it does not kill the root structure (mycelium) and can actually release more spores into the air during scrubbing. The high humidity in Jumeirah villas, especially after rain, means the moisture source is likely still active, so the mold will almost certainly return.

For a patch this large, professional remediation is strongly advised. The process involves more than just wiping it down; it requires isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to capture airborne spores, safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials. Crucially, they will also identify and rectify the underlying moisture source, which is often condensation from AC units, a plumbing leak, or water ingress through the wall—common issues in Dubai's climate.

The cost for professional remediation is not fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the infestation and the required structural repairs. You should request a site assessment from a certified provider. Any reputable company will provide a detailed scope of work and quote only after a physical inspection. Look for providers who can conduct pre- and post-remediation testing to verify the environment has been returned to a safe, acceptable standard. For immediate relief, improve ventilation in the room and consider using a dehumidifier while you arrange for an assessment.
