Black mold causing coughs: DIY removal or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. It's a pretty big patch and the wall feels damp to the touch. What's the best way to handle this properly in Dubai's humidity, and can I do it myself or do I need to call a professional company?

Given the damp wall and your children's symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. Black mold often indicates an ongoing moisture issue, and in Dubai's high humidity, improper removal can disperse harmful spores throughout your home.

The dampness suggests a possible leak or condensation issue behind the wall, common with year-round AC use. Simply wiping the surface won't address the root cause or the mold growing inside the wall cavity. A proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall, and using HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination.

For a confirmed case like this, Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend using a DM-approved contractor. They will diagnose the moisture source, contain the area, and ensure safe disposal. After removal, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly safe.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with detergent, a large patch on a damp wall is not a DIY project. The health risk from inhaling spores during improper cleanup is significant, especially for children.
