Black mold causing coughs; test myself or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m worried it’s because of the black spots I found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity seeping in. I’m getting headaches too, and I’m scared it’s making us sick. Should we get a professional mold test done or can I handle this myself with bleach?

Black mold, or any mold for that matter, can certainly cause the symptoms you're describing—persistent coughs, headaches, and allergy-like irritation are common. Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, condensation behind furniture is a frequent, hidden source for this exact problem.
You should not use bleach. It's mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deeper into porous surfaces like drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach with distilled white vinegar can be effective. However, the fact that it's behind a large piece of furniture, has likely been growing for some time, and is correlating with household health issues strongly suggests a larger infestation may be present within the wall cavity. In this case, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage inside the wall without destructive drilling. The most critical step is a lab test; what people call "black mold" could be Stachybotrys (which produces mycotoxins) or a less harmful species like Cladosporium. Only a microbiology lab culture can identify the species and confirm the actual health risk, which dictates the remediation protocol. Verifying the root moisture source is also essential to prevent rapid regrowth. Look for a provider that offers this diagnostic testing and clear, documented results. |
