Black mold causing coughs: who to call in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks, and I just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I think the issue is coming from a slow leak in the ensuite bathroom. What’s the best way to treat this safely and what kind of professional should I call in Dubai to make sure it doesn't come back?

Stop using the affected bathroom and restrict access to the bedroom. The persistent coughs are a common reaction to mold spores, and a hidden leak is a frequent culprit in Dubai villas.

For a situation involving health symptoms and a suspected leak, you need two professionals: a certified mold inspector and a licensed plumber. The inspector, ideally with a microbiology lab for sample analysis, will identify the mold type and the full extent of contamination, often using moisture meters and thermal cameras. The plumber must fix the source of the moisture; otherwise, the mold will return.

The remediation process should follow IICRC standards. This involves sealing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, and thoroughly cleaning all surfaces. Merely spraying a biocide is insufficient. Once the leak is repaired and the mold is removed, ensure the area is completely dry.

In Dubai's humid climate, consider installing a dehumidifier or improving ventilation to prevent future issues. For verification, request a post-remediation test from the inspector to confirm spore counts have returned to normal levels.
