Black mold causing kids' coughs in Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I'm worried it's because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humidity. What's the safest way to clean this ourselves to prevent it from coming back, and should I be taking them to a doctor for those coughs?

Black mold exposure can cause coughing, congestion, and throat irritation, especially in children whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. The recent high humidity in Dubai creates the perfect conditions for mold to grow behind furniture and on cold walls where condensation forms.
For a small area like behind a wardrobe, you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe down with a diluted white vinegar solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and does not address the root moisture problem. The most critical step is to identify and eliminate the source of moisture. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, and use a dehumidifier or run your AC more frequently to keep indoor humidity below 60%. Given that your children are already exhibiting symptoms, it is prudent to consult a doctor to rule out other causes and discuss the potential role of mold exposure. For peace of mind and to understand the specific type of mold present, a professional inspection and air quality test can be valuable. A lab analysis can identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation strategy and confirms if the airborne spore count is at a level known to cause health effects. In many villas in communities like Jumeirah Park, hidden moisture issues from AC drain line leaks or minor seepage are common culprits that require professional diagnosis to resolve permanently. |
