Black mold causing my kids' cough in Mirdif villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the heavy fog season started a few weeks ago, and I just found a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I'm really worried it's making them sick. What's the best way to deal with this quickly and safely for the children?

Black spots in a humid climate like Dubai are a serious concern, especially with the symptoms you're describing. The combination of recent heavy fog and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for mold growth through condensation.

Your first step is to isolate the area. Keep the children out of the bedroom and close the door to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the villa. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household products, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality, potentially intensifying the cough. For a situation involving children's health and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source—often a small leak in the AC drainage, plumbing, or condensation seepage through an external wall—and assess the extent of the growth, which can be hidden inside walls or under flooring.

A proper remediation plan for a villa in Mirdif should include containment of the affected zone, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials, followed by verification through post-remediation testing to confirm the environment is safe. Addressing the root moisture problem is the only way to prevent it from returning.
