Black mold causing our cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a spreading black patch in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our suitcases. Ever since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, my husband and I have both had a persistent dry cough and headaches that seem to get better when we're out for the day. Is it possible this is from the mold, and should we get a professional test done or just clean it ourselves immediately?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold growth and your symptoms of persistent dry cough and headaches are directly related. The timing, correlating with the spike in UAE humidity, is a significant indicator. The species often referred to as "black mold" (typically Stachybotrys chartarum) produces mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) that are known irritants and can cause the exact respiratory and neurological symptoms you describe.

In Dubai's climate, the combination of high ambient humidity and the constant cooling from air conditioning creates ideal conditions for condensation, particularly in poorly ventilated, cooler spaces like closets on exterior walls. Your suitcases may have absorbed ambient moisture, providing the necessary cellulose-based food source for the mold to colonize.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize the spores and mycotoxins, significantly increasing your exposure and potentially contaminating other areas of your home. Over-the-counter cleaning solutions are ineffective against penetrating porous materials and addressing the root cause.

A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our certified mold assessors will conduct a comprehensive evaluation, including moisture mapping with thermal imaging to identify the exact moisture source, air and surface sampling to speciate the mold and determine spore count levels indoors versus outdoors, and a detailed report outlining the scope of remediation required. This is crucial for your health and for any potential insurance or landlord claims, as it provides legally defensible data.
