Black mold causing our headaches; DIY removal or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our suitcases. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked, and for the last couple of weeks, my husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches. Is this mold likely the cause of our symptoms and what's the safest way for us to get rid of it ourselves, or should we call a professional company in Dubai immediately?

That black patch and your symptoms are almost certainly connected. The humidity spike is a classic trigger for indoor mold growth in Dubai, and the symptoms you describe – morning headaches and congestion – are very common reactions to mold exposure.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, DIY removal can be attempted safely. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrub the area, and let it dry completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and can worsen indoor air quality. The key is fixing the moisture source; in a closet, it's likely condensation from an exterior wall or lack of air circulation. Use a dehumidifier or a small desiccant bag in the enclosed space and ensure air can flow freely. Given that the growth has worsened and your symptoms persist, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch may only be a fraction of the actual growth, which could be inside the wall or under flooring. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source and can take air and surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and spore count in your air. In Dubai's climate, with year-round AC use, improper remediation can spread spores throughout the entire HVAC system. For health concerns and to ensure it's resolved at the root cause, calling a professional is the most effective and safest course of action. |
