Black mold found behind sofa bed. Health risks?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting terrible headaches. I finally pulled out the sofa bed in our Deira apartment to change the sheets and found a huge patch of black mold covering the wall behind it. I’m panicking now that this is what’s making us sick. What are the immediate health risks and how quickly do we need to get this professionally cleaned?

Black mold exposure can cause the exact symptoms you're describing, particularly persistent coughing and headaches. In high-humidity climates like Dubai, this type of mold thrives in poorly ventilated areas, especially behind furniture pushed against external walls where condensation can form. The immediate health risk is highest for children and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, as the spores can trigger allergic reactions and asthma-like symptoms.

You need to address this promptly. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mold will release a large number of spores into your apartment's air, potentially worsening your family's exposure. The first step is to isolate the area; keep the sofa bed pulled out and the room well-ventilated, but avoid using fans that could aerosolize the spores.

Professional remediation is strongly advised for a patch of this size. A reputable company will first conduct an inspection to assess the extent of the growth, even inside the wall cavity, which is common here. They will then contain the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove the contaminated materials. The underlying cause, which is likely moisture from condensation or a minor leak, must be identified and fixed to prevent rapid regrowth.

After remediation, request post-cleanup verification testing to confirm spore levels in the air have returned to a normal baseline. This is a standard practice for science-driven companies and provides peace of mind that the environment is safe again.
