Black mold found behind sofa, remove myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the sofa in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading up the wall behind it, probably from a slow leak we never noticed. I'm really worried about their health and don't know what to do first.
What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we call a professional company right away?

Stop all DIY plans and call a professional for inspection and remediation. The combination of the size of the infestation ("huge patch"), its location (structural wall), the presence of black mold (which can include high-risk species like Stachybotrys), and the fact that your children are already showing respiratory symptoms makes this a serious health risk that requires expert handling.
In Dubai's climate, hidden mold is a systemic issue. The high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold growth inside walls, especially from an undetected leak. Remediation isn't just about wiping the surface; it requires finding the moisture source, containing the area to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home, and safely removing contaminated materials. Professionals use containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to ensure it's done correctly. For your family's immediate safety, keep the children out of that room and avoid disturbing the area, as this will release more spores into the air. A proper inspection will involve moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the water damage. The most critical step is a post-remediation verification test, conducted by a third-party assessor, to confirm the air quality is safe before anyone reoccupies the room. This documented proof is non-negotiable when children's health is involved. |
