Black mold found; dangerous for pregnant wife and need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had a constant damp smell ever since the heavy humidity a few weeks ago. I just pulled the wardrobe away from the wall and found a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, hidden behind it. My wife is pregnant and I'm really worried about her breathing it in. Is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a trip to ACE?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention, not a DIY solution from ACE. The presence of a persistent damp smell and a visible patch of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum) behind a wardrobe is a significant indicator of a moisture issue, which is common in Jumeirah due to high humidity levels and condensation from year-round AC use.

For a pregnant individual, the risks are elevated. Exposure to mycotoxins from certain types of mold can potentially affect respiratory health and has been linked to adverse outcomes. Disturbing the mold yourself, even for cleaning, can aerosolize these spores and mycotoxins, drastically increasing the concentration in the air your wife breathes.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict health and safety standards (such as those from DM and DHA) that require containment, specialized HEPA filtration air scrubbers to clean the air, and professional-grade antimicrobial agents for treatment. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the exact species and concentration, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. This is not a surface cleaning task; the moisture source must be identified and corrected to prevent recurrence.

I strongly recommend you do not attempt to handle this yourself. Contact a certified professional immediately. Our team at Saniservice is trained in these exact scenarios and can provide a comprehensive inspection and safe, effective remediation.
