Black mold found, kids coughing. Doctor or removal first?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I’ve just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. What are the specific health risks for young children, and should I take them to a doctor immediately or just focus on getting the mold professionally removed first?

The coughing is likely related to the mold exposure, especially with Dubai's high humidity creating ideal conditions for growth behind furniture and in poorly ventilated areas. For young children, the primary risks are respiratory irritation, persistent allergic reactions like coughing and wheezing, and potential exacerbation of asthma if present. While "black mold" is often used as a blanket term, the specific species (like Stachybotrys) determines the actual risk level, which requires lab identification.

You should take your children to a doctor first to address their immediate symptoms. Inform the doctor about the mold discovery, as this is critical for diagnosis. A physician can assess if they need treatment for allergic reactions or to rule out other causes.

Simultaneously, do not attempt to remove it yourself. Disturbing the patch releases a massive amount of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening the situation. Focus on arranging for a professional mold inspection. A proper assessment will use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness (often condensation from AC or a hidden leak) and air sampling to determine spore levels throughout the villa. The remediation process itself must be containment-based to prevent cross-contamination, not just wiping the visible spot. In many Jumeirah villas, the root cause is chronic humidity and lack of airflow behind large furniture; a professional can provide solutions specific to our climate.
