Black mold from AC condensation: DIY or professional help?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots growing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back even darker after a week. I’m worried it’s because of the AC unit’s condensation. Is this something I can tackle myself with a proper cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company?

The black speckled pattern on an external wall strongly suggests a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating a temperature differential. Vinegar often fails on porous surfaces like wood or drywall because it only addresses surface mold, not the roots (hyphae) growing within.
For a small area (under one square meter), a thorough DIY approach can be attempted. Use a proper biocide cleaner, not just vinegar, and scrub the area. Crucially, you must identify and control the moisture source. Check if your AC unit’s condensate drain line is clogged or if the cold air is directly hitting that wall, causing excessive sweating. A dehumidifier in the room can help. Since the mold returned aggressively, it indicates a persistent moisture problem and deeper infiltration. In such cases, professional assessment is recommended. Remediation involves more than cleaning; it requires isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials if necessary, and using HEPA filtration to capture spores. A professional can also perform air and surface testing to identify the mold species and confirm the moisture source is resolved, which is vital for preventing recurrence. For rental properties, this documentation is often required. |
