Black mold from AC drip: DIY clean or call pros?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been dripping a bit of water, and now I’m starting to see these small black spots on the wall behind the curtain. It’s been about two weeks and the damp smell is getting stronger, especially at night. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or is it time to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by the high humidity and condensation issues common with Dubai's climate. The continuous AC drip is providing the perfect moisture source, and the porous wall material is acting as a food source for mold colonies. The increasing damp smell indicates active growth.

While a small, surface-level mold patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, your situation has several red flags that strongly suggest professional intervention is necessary. First, the mold is originating from a concealed leak within your AC system or its drainage line. Simply wiping the visible spots on the wall is a temporary fix; the source of the moisture inside the wall cavity remains unaddressed, and the mold will inevitably return, often worse than before. Second, the persistent musty odor signifies that the growth is not just on the surface but is likely proliferating within the wall itself.

Using supermarket bleach is highly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots. Furthermore, it introduces excess moisture and can release harmful chlorine fumes, especially in an enclosed bedroom.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation requires identifying and rectifying the moisture source, isolating the contaminated area to prevent cross-contamination, and using professional-grade biocides and HEPA filtration to remove the spores safely.

For a situation involving an AC leak, hidden wall damage, and a persistent odor, a professional inspection is critical. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging and moisture meters to locate the exact source of the leak and the full extent of the infestation. We are fully compliant with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards for remediation.

I recommend you cease using the AC unit and call us immediately for an assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to prevent further damage and potential health impacts.
