Black mold from AC humidity: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been so humid lately. I just pulled back the rug in our bedroom corner and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots on the skirting board. It’s been spreading for a while I think, probably from the AC condensation. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Black mold from AC condensation is common in Dubai's humidity, especially in areas like JVC where enclosed spaces trap moisture. Whether you can clean it yourself depends entirely on the extent.
For a small, isolated patch (under 1 square foot), a DIY approach may suffice. Use a vinegar solution, not bleach, as vinegar can kill many mold types on non-porous surfaces like skirting boards. Scrub the area, ensure it's completely dry, and fix the moisture source—typically by having your AC serviced to check its drainage and insulation. If the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated porous materials like drywall, or if you notice a musty smell or health symptoms, professional assessment is necessary. Spreading behind a rug suggests it may be more established. Professionals use containment to prevent spores from spreading during cleaning and air scrubbers to clean the air, which is critical for toxigenic species like Stachybotrys. In Dubai, any remediation should conclude with a post-clearance test from an independent lab to verify the space is safe, which is a standard we adhere to for our own work. The goal is not just to clean the visible growth but to measurably restore the indoor air quality. |
