Black mold from AC in bedroom: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has felt really damp for the past couple of weeks. I just pulled our king-sized bed away from the wall and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner where the AC unit is. We’ve been waking up with stuffy noses and I’m worried about my toddler. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

This is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention. The black mold you describe, likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species, is a significant health hazard, particularly for a toddler with a developing respiratory system. The symptoms you're experiencing are a clear indicator of poor indoor air quality.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The extreme humidity, combined with year-round AC use, creates massive condensation problems. The AC unit itself is likely the source, either due to a clogged drain line causing an overflow, poor insulation on the cold air ducts leading to sweating within the wall cavity, or a malfunctioning unit not properly dehumidifying the air.

Do not use bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the roots intact. More critically, it can agitate the spores, releasing a larger, more hazardous cloud into the air you breathe.

A professional remediation company like Saniservice follows a strict protocol per UAE standards: first, a comprehensive inspection and air quality testing to identify the species and spore count; second, setting up containment with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination; third, safe removal and disposal of contaminated porous materials (like your drywall and possibly insulation); and finally, a thorough hygienization of the area and the AC system itself. Attempting a DIY cleanup will not address the hidden moisture source and will likely lead to rapid regrowth and continued health risks.

For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against any DIY attempt. Please contact our certified team immediately for an inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
