Black mold from AC leak: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpeted floor underneath. I thought it had dried, but now I’ve peeled back the corner and there’s a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach or should I just call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

Based on the description of a black mold patch the size of a dinner plate originating from an AC leak, my professional recommendation is to call a certified professional immediately. This is not a situation for DIY remediation.

The black coloration is a significant concern, as it often indicates the presence of Stachybotrys chartarum or other toxigenic species, which can pose serious health risks. The high humidity levels we experience in Dubai, combined with the constant moisture from a leaking AC unit, create an ideal breeding ground for such mold, allowing it to penetrate deep into the carpet fibers and potentially the underlying padding and subfloor. Applying bleach is an ineffective and potentially dangerous solution; it may only lighten the surface discoloration without killing the root structure, and the chemical reaction can release harmful spores and vapors into your indoor air.

In the UAE, proper remediation requires adherence to specific protocols for containment, air filtration, and disposal to prevent cross-contamination. A professional company like Saniservice will not only safely remove the mold and the affected materials but, crucially, will also employ industrial-grade equipment to identify and rectify the root cause—the AC leak—to prevent recurrence.

For a situation of this scale and potential hazard, a professional inspection and remediation are essential. I strongly advise you to contact a certified specialist to assess the full extent of the damage.
