Black mold from AC leak in Dubai closet - clean and prevent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve found black spots spreading on the back wall and some of our shoes. We’re in a Marina high-rise and I’m worried the humidity is just making it worse. What’s the best way to clean this myself and is there a specific type of dehumidifier or product that works best in Dubai to stop it from coming back?

Stop using that AC unit immediately to prevent further moisture spread. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, molds that thrive in Dubai's high humidity, especially in enclosed spaces like closets with AC condensation leaks.

For a small area (under 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the wall with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a detergent solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Discard any moldy shoes or items, as spores embed in porous materials.

Prevention is critical. The leak must be repaired first; contact your building management, as this is typically their responsibility under Dubai municipality regulations for common AC systems. After repair, a small desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than refrigerant models for Dubai's climate and small, enclosed spaces. Look for one with a built-in hygrometer to maintain humidity below 50%, the level where mold growth is inhibited.

Given the leak and visible spreading, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Mold inside walls from a persistent leak is common here and requires specialized equipment to assess the full extent. A science-driven company with its own microbiology lab can identify the species and provide a targeted remediation protocol to ensure it doesn't return, which is crucial for health in a bedroom environment.
