Black mold from AC: professional cost or DIY in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing out a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’ve just spotted a patch of black mold in the corner behind my bedroom wardrobe. I’m worried it’s spreading because of the humidity. What’s the ballpark cost to get this professionally treated by a company here, and is it absolutely necessary to hire someone or can I handle it myself with products from ACE?

The damp smell and visible black mold indicate a moisture issue that's likely feeding through your AC system. Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, this is a common but serious problem that requires immediate attention.

For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), you can attempt DIY with a microfiber cloth, a spray bottle of white vinegar or a commercial mold remover from ACE. However, DIY is only for surface-level treatment on non-porous materials. It does not address the root cause—the moisture source inside your AC unit or walls—or the airborne spores you cannot see. The damp smell strongly suggests the mold is more widespread within the system itself.

Hiring a professional is necessary if the mold returns after cleaning, the area is larger than a square foot, or the smell persists. They will identify and rectify the moisture source, often a clogged condensate drain line or poor insulation causing condensation, then properly contain and remove the affected material. The cost for professional remediation is not fixed; it varies significantly based on the extent of the contamination, whether walls need to be opened, and if AC duct cleaning is required. You should request a detailed site inspection from a certified provider to get an accurate assessment and quote. Look for companies that provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space is truly clear.
