Black mold from AC: treat myself or call Dubai pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black speckled mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall facing the outside, and we've had the AC on constantly for months. What's the best way to treat this myself, or should I call a professional company in Dubai right away?

Given the location on an exterior wall and your AC running constantly, this is classic condensation-related mold. In Dubai's high humidity, cold interior walls from AC create the perfect damp environment for mold growth behind furniture. The black speckled pattern suggests surface mold, but wall penetration is possible.

For a small area (under 1 square meter), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, let the wall dry completely, then consider applying a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting.

However, with children experiencing respiratory symptoms, a DIY approach is not advisable. The visible mold might only be a small part of the problem; spores could be circulating through your AC system. A professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the species and the full extent of contamination. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol and ensuring your AC unit isn't spreading spores throughout your home.

In Dubai, look for a company that provides a detailed report from an accredited microbiology lab, not just a visual assessment. They should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold remediation, which includes containment of the affected area and HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores during the process.
