Black mold from AC vent: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these black speckles spreading out from the vent. I’ve wiped it with vinegar, but the damp smell is still really strong. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Given the visible black speckles and persistent damp smell, this situation likely requires professional assessment. The combination of a leaking AC unit and Dubai's high humidity creates ideal conditions for mold growth that often extends deep into the carpet padding and potentially the subfloor, which vinegar cannot effectively address.

A temporary leak over weeks has allowed significant moisture accumulation. The first step is to stop the source; have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately to prevent further water damage. For the existing mold, DIY cleaning is not advisable. Surface wiping only addresses visible spores, while the underlying mycotoxins and moisture remain, allowing regrowth. The damp smell confirms the problem is not superficial.

In Dubai's climate, improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread contamination to other areas of your home. Professional remediation is recommended to properly contain the area, remove and dispose of affected porous materials like carpet and padding, and use industrial-grade HEPA scrubbing to decontaminate the space. They will also use moisture meters to confirm the drying of structural elements, which is critical to prevent recurrence.

Since this is in a bedroom where you spend many hours, and given the potential for respiratory irritation, a professional assessment will determine the exact species and extent. Look for a company that provides documented before-and-after testing from an independent lab to verify the environment has been returned to a safe, dry state.
