Black mold health risks for kids: doctor visit needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's been so humid lately and I think it's been growing there for a while, but we only moved the furniture to find a lost toy today. What are the actual health risks for a 4 and 6 year old, and should I take them to a doctor immediately or just focus on cleaning this first?

Black mold exposure can cause respiratory irritation in children, particularly those with existing allergies or asthma. Common symptoms include persistent coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. The high humidity in Dubai creates ideal conditions for this growth, especially in poorly ventilated areas behind furniture.

For a 4 and 6 year old, a doctor's visit is recommended to rule out other causes and discuss their symptoms. You do not need to go to an emergency room unless they are having significant trouble breathing. In the meantime, focus on limiting their exposure. Keep them out of the master bedroom and ensure good ventilation in your home.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself without proper precautions. Disturbing the mold releases spores into the air, which can exacerbate respiratory issues. For a confirmed black mold situation, a professional inspection and remediation is the safest approach. They will use containment procedures and specialized equipment to remove the growth and identify the moisture source, which is critical to preventing its return in our climate.
