Black mold in AC: can I clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell that’s making us wake up stuffy. I just pulled the filter and found black speckles all around the vent edges inside the unit. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and this started getting worse after the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service?

Black speckles and a damp smell in your AC are classic signs of microbial growth, likely mold or mildew, which is extremely common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The recent humidity spike creates the perfect environment for condensation inside the unit, which feeds this growth.

For a surface-level issue confined to the easily accessible vent edges and filter, a thorough cleaning with a vinegar solution (not bleach, as it can be corrosive and doesn't prevent regrowth) can be a first step. Ensure the unit is completely powered off at the circuit breaker. Remove and clean the filter separately.

However, what you see on the vent edges is often just the visible portion. The real growth is typically deeper within the coil and drip pan, areas you cannot properly access or clean without professional tools. DIY cleaning often just temporarily removes the surface evidence without addressing the root colony, leading to a quick return of the smell and spores.

Given that this is in your bedroom and already causing stuffiness, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use specialized detergents and high-pressure steam to disinfect the entire internal system, not just the visible parts. The key is to hire a service that provides documented evidence of cleaning, such as before-and-after photos of the coil or even microbial air testing to verify the reduction of spore counts, which aligns with best practices here. For a villa in Jumeirah, ensuring the entire system is addressed is crucial for your indoor air quality.
