Black mold in AC causing child's sneezing: who to call?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our kids' bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit, and now I’ve spotted these dark blackish-green patches on the wall behind the curtain. My youngest has been sneezing non-stop for the past week and I’m starting to panic. Is this definitely black mold, and who should I call first to get it professionally tested and removed?

The patches you describe are likely mold, given the AC leak and Dubai's high humidity creating ideal conditions for growth. While not all black-colored mold is the notorious 'toxic black mold' (Stachybotrys), any mold in a child's bedroom can significantly aggravate allergies and respiratory issues, explaining the persistent sneezing.

Your first call should be to a certified mold inspection and testing company, not a general handyman. In Dubai, look for providers with certifications like IICRC and, crucially, their own microbiology lab. This is key because they should take air and surface samples from the room, analyze them to identify the exact species and concentration, and provide a detailed lab report. This evidence-based approach tells you the actual health risk and the precise scope of remediation needed.

Do not attempt to remove it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. The remediation process for a situation involving a child's health and an AC leak involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and addressing the moisture source—the leaking AC unit itself will also need a thorough inspection and cleaning by a certified HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence. A proper post-remediation verification test from the lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly safe.
